In the not so distant past, substance abuse and addiction was highly stigmatized in America. Recovering from addiction was viewed as a simple choice to be made by the individual struggling, and his or her inability to stop abusing drugs and/ or alcohol was often thought to be the result weakness. Addiction is now accurately listed as the brain disorder that it is, and is included in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5). Addiction is characterized by compulsively engaging in rewarding stimuli regardless of the negative consequences. Addiction can wreck havoc in all areas of one’s life, and if left untreated can be life-threatening. Although the stigma associated with addiction has yet to be completely resolved in American society, the treatment options that have become available to those in need has grown, exponentially. Nowadays, there are countless detox options, a huge variety of substance abuse and/ or addiction treatment programs, and an abundance of aftercare support available to an individual struggling with substance abuse and/ or addiction.

Sober Living Options

The standard process an individual goes through when recovering from substance abuse and/ or addiction is to begin with a detox program, followed by some form of substance abuse and/ or addiction treatment, and then transition back into society. There are several variations that can make up the transitional step. Depending on the specific needs of the individual, they may elect to return home immediately upon the completion of the substance abuse and/ or addiction treatment program, or they may feel drawn to reside at a sober living home. Sober living facilities are essentially a transitional step that occurs between completing a substance abuse and/ or addiction treatment program and returning home. Sober living facilities provide an individual with a safe environment that is free from drugs and alcohol to continue to practice implementing the lessons learned during treatment.

Every sober living facility is different and will have somewhat unique requirements. While sober living facilities are not intentionally exclusive, some facilities may not be welcoming to all. The purpose of a sober living facility is to provide a safe and structured environment. In order for the residents to feel a sense of security and emotional safety, they must feel comfortable in their surroundings. For example, some individuals may feel more comfortable living with individuals of the same sex, which would make locating a gender specific sober living facility advantageous.

Much like the myriad substance abuse and/ or addiction treatment programs available, there are a wide variety of sober living options available for members of the LGBTQ community. When searching for a sober living facility, it is imperative to consider one’s personal needs. With the vast options available, there is no need to settle for a sober living facility that does not meet your needs. Make sure that whichever sober living facility you select is capable of accommodating and supporting all of your nuanced needs.
