The path of recovery is different for every person. SMART is an acronym for Self-Management And Recovery Training. It is a “global community of mutual-support groups…to help one another resolve problems with any addiction (to drugs or alcohol or to activities such as gambling or over-eating).”  Unlike Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA) that are based on a twelve-step program, SMART recovery is built around by a four-point program, which include the following, as provided by SMART Recovery International:

  • Building and maintaining the motivation to change.
  • Coping with urges to use.
  • Managing thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in an effective way without addictive behaviors.
  • Living a balances, positive, and healthy life.

Akin to individuals that follow a twelve-step treatment approach, those that utilize a non-twelve step approach to recovery (i.e. SMART recovery) also have the option to transition into a sober living facility after completing an inpatient drug and/ or alcohol treatment program, prior to returning home. Research has found that residing in a sober living facility can enhance one’s success for long-term abstinence from drug and/ or alcohol use. There are a plethora of sober living options available to those in need.

Sober Living

Although transitioning from a substance abuse and/ or addiction treatment program into a sober living facility is optional, it has become increasingly popular as it is widely viewed as an essential part of the continuing care component following a rehab program. Sober living facilities are all different. There are facilities that are open to individuals with specified needs and/ or varied preferences. For example, some sober living facilities will be gender specific and only open to individuals that identify as female. Each sober living facility will have its own set of rules and regulations as well as corresponding consequences for violations. While the specific rules will likely vary, there are several that are commonly enforced in most sober living facilities. These can include, but are not limited to:

  • Zero tolerance for drugs and/ or alcohol on the premises.
  • A reasonable curfew.
  • Residents are required to regularly participate in substance abuse and/ or addiction support group meetings (twelve-step meetings, and/ or non-twelve step meetings).
  • Often residents are required to have a job and/ or volunteer so as to be contributing members of society.

It is important to note that many sober living facilities are open to individuals in recovery regardless of whether they are following a twelve-step model, the SMART recovery model, or another substance abuse and/ or addiction treatment model. The overall purpose of sober living facilities is to offer individuals a transitional residence to continue practicing the lessons learned during one’s treatment program, without the triggers and temptations that may present from immediately returning home. The extra time surrounded by individuals that prioritize sobriety and additional structure can strengthen one’s foundation of for continuing to lead a sober life. Every individual is different and will have a unique recovery experience, as well as nuanced needs and varied comfort levels when it comes to a sober living facility.
