Sober living houses, also called sober living homes or facilities are a residential transitional living option available to individuals that have successfully completed a substance abuse and/ or addiction treatment program. Sober living houses offer individuals that have become newly sober a safe housing option that provide supportive and structured living conditions, prior to an individual returning to his or her home. It serves as a transitional home where individuals can continue to practice prioritizing sobriety and implementing the lessons learned during treatment, without the presence of some of the triggers and distractions that can arise in mainstream society. Nowadays, there are a wide variety of specialized sober living facilities available.

Aftercare Plans

An integral component of any substance abuse and/ or addiction treatment program is developing an aftercare plan. An aftercare plan will be unique to each individual. An aftercare plan is usually co created by the individual in treatment and his or her clinical team. Depending on the needs of the individual it can be made to include highly detailed, broad, and/ or generalized suggestions for leading a sober life post treatment. The written document intended to act as a tangible resource to assist in relapse prevention and success with one’s continued sobriety.

Sober Living Facilities

The purpose of a sober living house is to provide an individual with a safe, alcohol and drug free environment in which to develop and foster sustainable daily and long-term routines. Sober living facilities can help an individual develop positive friendships that can in turn, reinforce one’s desire to remain sober. Each sober living facility has its own rules and regulations. While the specifics of the rules and consequences for violations will vary, as they will depend on each sober living facility, there are several overarching rules that are integrated in most sober living homes. Examples of rules that residents must abide by include honoring curfews, attending group meetings, and respecting a zero tolerance for the presence of drugs and/ or alcohol on premises of the sober living house. The rules in a sober living home are set to create structure, help individuals remain accountable for their actions, and create a camaraderie that is surrounding sobriety.

Alcoholics Anonymous

Alcoholics Anonymous, also known as AA, is a mutual aid fellowship that is comprised of a twelve-step program, with the purpose of enabling its “members to stay sober and help other alcoholics achieve sobriety.” Members of AA often participate in regular support group meetings, as well as have a go-to peer in the program (sponsor). Many individuals struggling with substance abuse and/ or addiction find AA to be an invaluable aspect of the recovery process. It is highly common for a sober living facility to require its residents to attend a certain number of support group meetings weekly, and many often hold regular AA meetings onsite.
