Every individual is unique and will require a somewhat differentiated treatment plan when it comes to recovering from substance abuse and/ or addiction. As the nuanced needs of each individual struggling with substance abuse and/ or addiction continue to surface, so too have the myriad treatment options for substance abuse and/ or addiction. As such, it is no surprise that every sober living facility is different. Each sober living facility will have its own unique set of rules and regulations, as well as offer distinct residential accommodations.

Sober living facilities do not only have facility specific rules, but will also have differing consequences when it comes to violating the rules. Though the exact rules will depend on the specific sober living facility selected, there are several common rules that are widely implemented. Some examples of regularly implemented rules for residing in a sober living facility include the following:

  1. Zero tolerance for drugs or alcohol: with the exception of some specific prescription medications (i.e. antidepressants) no drugs or alcohol are allowed on the premises.
  2. Residents must pay: any individual that wants to reside in a sober living facility must be able to cover the cost of his or her expenses. The source of payment for an individual may differ (i.e. some insurance companies may provide payment, family members may financially contribute, etc.), but must be fully paid, nonetheless.
  3. Must actually sleep at the facility the majority of the time: individuals that reside at a sober living facility are required to sleep at the house, usually for a minimum of five nights per week. Some facilities provide certain exceptions for travel on an individual basis.
  4. Agree to random testing: many sober living facilities conduct random drug and alcohol screenings for all residents.
  5. Do not miss curfew: residents of a sober living facility must not only be accountable for their whereabouts when they are not on the premises, but must strictly adhere to the specific sober living facility’s curfew.
  6. Participate in household activities: resident’s must be contributing members of their sober living community by showing up for the regularly scheduled support group meetings as well as completing household chores.
  7. Work: many residents of sober living facilities are encouraged (in some facilities required) to find part time or full time employment, and/ or volunteer.

Sober living facilities are intended to provide further support to individuals with their recovery process. The rules are designed to keep residents safe and hold them accountable for their actions. Sober living facilities provide a more structured environment to enable residents to create sustainable daily routines where they are able to foster and build a sturdy foundation for leading a sober life.
