Addiction, also referred to as substance use disorder, is listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) as a brain disorder that is characterized by compulsively engaging in rewarding stimuli without regard for the ensuing negative consequences. There are a variety of treatment options available for any individual struggling with substance abuse and/ or addiction. It is important to note that every person is unique and will benefit from a customized treatment plan. Each individual will respond differently to the array of therapeutic treatment methods available and the specific needs of the individual in treatment should be considered prior to selecting a treatment program. There are a myriad of distinct treatment programs available to those in need.

Step One: Detox

Detox is the process that rids one’s body of any foreign substances. It is an essential step in one’s recovery from substance abuse and/ or addiction. There are several detox methods with varying levels of support. Some individuals will opt to detox at home with minimal support. Others may decide to undergo detox at home with the support of friend’s and/ or family. Undergoing a supervised detox provides an individual with access to consistent support during the entirety of his or her detox process. There are inpatient detox facilities that require an individual to reside at the detox facility and are then able to provide individuals with care and support throughout the duration of their detox process. Medically assisted detox programs will provide an individual with medication to help manage the adverse withdrawal symptoms that occur during the detox process. Medically supervised detox programs provide constant supervision from one or more qualified medical professional during detox. Regardless of the detox method chosen, some form of subsequent treatment is often recommended to help an individual remain sober.

Treatment Programs

Depending on the specific needs of the individual, there are several different types of treatment programs available. Inpatient treatment programs are treatment programs that require an individual to reside at the treatment facility for the duration of his or her acute substance abuse and/ or addiction treatment. Inpatient treatment programs generally last from twenty-eight days to three months long, and in some cases longer. Inpatient treatment programs are beneficial as they allow an individual to be fully immersed in the treatment program twenty-four-hours a day throughout the duration of the program. There are also outpatient treatment programs, where the participating individual does not reside at the treatment facility. The individual is required to commit and be present for a certain number of hours, daily. Outpatient treatment programs can last fourteen days up to three months long, in some cases longer. Outpatient treatment programs can be a great option for individuals that are unable to relocate.

California

Part of a successful recovery plan is for an individual to foster healthy lifestyle choices during his or her treatment. The consistency of the beautiful weather in California as well as its picturesque environment can help create a solid foundation to any individual in recovery. Furthermore, the sober community in California is expansive and welcoming. There are an abundance of treatment centers that cater to young adults all across California. Being part of a sober community can be fundamental to an individual’s continued recovery process. There are countless support group meetings held daily in California, which are an excellent place for individuals to develop friendships and support systems. While conducting an Internet search may provide more pointed results, Psychology Today compiled a list of available treatment centers for young adults in California.
