Sober living facilities are residences that an individual may opt to reside in post the successful completion of a substance abuse or addiction treatment program. Electing to move into a sober living can be beneficial for an individual in recovery as they are drug-free environments, filled with like-minded individuals who have a common goal (sobriety). There is a myriad of different types of sober living facilities. Due to the fact that laws surrounding quality standards of sober living facilities have yet to be passed, it is essential for anyone considering moving into a sober living facility to thoroughly research and select carefully. There are four main aspects of a sober living facility with which to consider: cost, size, house rules, and location. Identifying your particular wants and needs will help distinguish which sober living facility will be best. Most substance abuse and addiction treatment programs will discuss the possibility of moving into a sober living facility prior to the completion of the program. Any substance abuse and addiction treatment program will be an excellent resource for locating a sober living facility.

Cost of Sober Living

It is important to note that most sober living facilities in Los Angeles are privately owned, and fees vary significantly. The cost of living will usually be shared proportionately amongst its residents. Prior to committing to a sober living facility make sure you know the answers to the following questions:

  • Are the utility bills included in the monthly rent?
  • Will there be a rent increase per person if someone leaves?
  • Is there a termination penalty for leaving prior to the end of the rental agreement? If so, what is it?
  • Is there an extra fee for the use of amenities (i.e. internet, cable…etc.)?

Be sure to thoroughly read through the lease agreement and do not hesitate to ask any clarifying questions.

Size

The size of sober living facilities can range drastically, as can their demographics. Make sure you are aware of and comfortable with the number of residents that live in the home. It is also important to know if the facility is mixed gender or singe gender. Additionally, it is helpful to know what the turnover rate is regarding the average duration of one’s stay.

House Rules

Every sober living facility will have a unique set of house rules. They are designed to help residents maintain sobriety. Make sure you know what they are and are comfortable with adhering to them.

Location

Accessible conveniences to a sober living facility, such as proximity to support group meetings, nature, and bus stops, for example, can help an individual maintain his or her sobriety. Additionally, being located farther away from bars, nightclubs and other temptations can be equally helpful in maintaining one’s sobriety. The location of a sober living facility can also play a part in its monthly rental cost.

Aftercare Plan

Aftercare plans are an integral component to an individual’s substance abuse and addiction treatment program. Many individuals will co-create an aftercare plan during their treatment program to help ease the transition back into society. Aftercare plans do not necessarily only pertain to one’s sobriety, but often will touch on all aspects of one’s sober life. They can be as detailed as listing a regular wake-up time, options for breakfast foods, and an exercise plan or as vague as listing support group meeting options. Aftercare plans are designed with an individual in mind, and will address and cater to his or her specific needs. Transitioning from a substance abuse and addiction treatment program into a sober living facility can help an individual practice implementing his or her aftercare plan effectively.
