Addiction can affect all areas of one’s life. An individual that struggles with substance abuse and/ or addiction prioritizes satisfying his or her drug cravings above all else. This can lead to financial strain, legal complications, employment issues, adverse physiological effects, and ruptures in relationships. The recovery process for individuals struggling with substance abuse and/ or addiction can be challenging, and romantic partners that struggle with addiction can make the process even more arduous. Often when both parties in a couple abuse alcohol and/ or drugs, unhealthy relationship patterns develop (e.g. emotionally distant, deception, etc.), which can perpetuate and reinforce substance-abusing behaviors. Fortunately, there are a variety of treatment options for individuals struggling with substance abuse and/ or addiction, including rehab options for couples.

Inpatient Vs. Outpatient

Rehab options are divided into two categories: inpatient substance abuse and/ or addiction treatment programs and outpatient substance abuse and/ or addiction treatment programs. Inpatient rehab requires participants to reside at the treatment facility for the duration of the program, whereas outpatient treatment programs do not have a residential component. Though they differ in setting and structure, both inpatient and outpatient rehab options share the same primary goal, which is defined in the Merriam-Webster Dictionary as “helping someone (such as an injured patient or a drug user) to become healthy again.” The benefits of offering different treatment options (e.g. inpatient, outpatient) are that individuals are able to attend a treatment program that best suits their specific needs.

Couples Rehab

Each treatment program, regardless of its structure is distinct. Some variations could include the specific expectations of participants, the duration of the treatment programs (varying from twenty-one days long to six months long, in some cases longer), implementing different combinations of therapeutic modalities (e.g. cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, creative arts therapies, etc.), the facility itself and associated amenities offered will be unique to each program, and many rehabs offer specialized treatment programs (e.g. dual diagnosis treatment programs). Every person will require a somewhat tailored treatment plan, as each individual has nuanced needs, even in situations where a couple attends treatment together. Though recovering from substance abuse and/ or addiction is a personal process, individuals in committed relationships may benefit from attending a couples addiction treatment program. Couples rehab can help each party learn healthy coping mechanisms to manage stress, as well as a variety of effective communication strategies and additional tools and techniques to successfully overcome obstacles, prevent relapse, and achieve long-term recovery.
