There are a variety of mental health complications that develop as a direct result of exposure to trauma, and veterans are no exception. The emotional weight that can manifest from participating in and/ or witnessing combat can be debilitating. The frequent juxtaposition of a veteran serving to protect his or her country and simultaneously struggling to effectively cope with and navigate the related emotional trauma from being tasked with this role is astounding. Too often veterans are impeccably trained to remain physically safe, but lack emotional training to safeguard their mental and emotional wellbeing. Unfortunately, as a result, in attempt to cope, some veterans may seek fleeting relief by self-medicating through the use and abuse of drugs and/ or alcohol. It is also important to note that veterans are as susceptible to developing substance use disorder as any other person.

Treatment Options

The substance abuse and/ or addiction treatment options for individuals, both veterans and civilians alike, are vast for those in need. Due to the high volume of treatment options available finding a rehab center that is able to accommodate one’s nuanced treatment needs can seem like an overwhelming feat. In order to reduce some of the angst surrounding locating a rehab center and the overall selection process, consider the following:

  • Know your needs: consider any specific substance abuse and/ or addiction treatment needs (e.g. dual diagnosis treatment).
  • Narrow down your options: excluding rehab programs that are unable to accommodate one’s needs is an excellent way to narrow down viable options.
  • Cost: though the costs and fees associated with attending a rehab program varies, attendees are often responsible for paying for treatment, as such it is important to understand and have the ability to cover the out-of-pocket financial obligation.
  • Program setting: rehab programs can be structured as either inpatient treatment or outpatient treatment. Individuals that are unable to reside away from home for the duration of the treatment program will benefit from outpatient treatment, conversely people that are able to reside away from home for treatment may benefit from inpatient treatment. Deciding which type of program setting best suits one’s needs can be helpful.

Every person is different and not all rehab programs will resonate with each person. In addition to being mindful of the above suggestions, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs offers supportive resources for veterans in need of substance abuse and/ or addiction treatment.
