There are several different types of substance abuse and addiction rehab programs available. Generally, the duration of a rehab program ranges between fourteen days to ninety days. There are, of course rehab programs that last longer than ninety days, but rarely are substance abuse and addiction rehab programs shorter than fourteen days. The initial stage of recovery from substance abuse and addiction, known as detox, lasts an average of three to four days. Detox is the process an individual must go through to rid his or her body of all foreign substances. While some rehab programs offer detox support, this time is typically not taken into account when delineating the duration of a rehab program, as it must occur prior to one’s commencing. Every individual has nuanced needs when it comes to substance abuse and addiction recovery. Each individual will have a unique experience and the length of time a person attends rehab will vary. In short, rehab will take as long as it takes for a person to learn how to stay clean and sober.

Types Of Rehab

There are two distinct types of rehab available to individuals in need of substance abuse and addiction treatment: Inpatient rehab and outpatient rehab. Regardless of whether the rehab program is inpatient or out patient, each specific program will have varied methods of treatment, with differing capabilities and specializations. The specific needs of an individual will help distinguish which type of rehab will best behoove him or her to provide the individual with the optimal outcome.

Inpatient rehab programs are programs that require the participant to reside at the treatment facility for the duration of the program. The length of time an inpatient rehab program can range from fourteen days to as long as six months (in some cases longer). Inpatient substance abuse and addiction treatment programs are best suited for individuals who would benefit from being completely immersed in the program, every hour of every day. There are many reasons why inpatient rehab could be the best choice of treatment. Inpatient rehab may be the best option for individuals who have co-morbid mental health disorders (provided the program is equipped to support those with dual diagnoses), individuals suffering from long-term addiction struggles, and/ or individuals who need clear distance from the triggers and temptations of home life.

Outpatient rehab programs are do not require a participant to reside at the treatment facility for the duration of the program. Individuals who find themselves unable to leave their residence and/ or have commitments that do not allow the move into a treatment facility for a period of time can find more flexibility in an outpatient treatment program. Typically out patient programs will require an individual to attend treatment for a certain number of hours, daily, over a specified period of time (ranging from fourteen days to three months).

While completing a substance abuse and addiction treatment program is helpful to one’s continued success with sobriety, the subsequent steps in one’s rehab experience are equally important. Learning imperative lessons to living a healthy, sober life during rehab are the building blocks by which a person must use to shape a sustainably sober life. An individual who has completed his or her substance abuse and addiction treatment program must adhere closely to his or her aftercare plan.
