Detoxification, or detox, is defined as “a set of interventions aimed at managing acute intoxication and withdrawal. It denotes a clearing of toxins from the body of the patient who is acutely intoxicated and/ or dependent on substances of abuse.” The detox process enables your body to expel built-up toxins you are harboring in your organs and tissues. Our bodies have an innate ability to rid our systems of toxins, and we can support that detoxification process with a few simple habits.
Change Your Diet
A nutrient-rich, nourishing diet can stimulate your liver, kidney, and colon, which are the primary organs for removing toxins from your body and increase their efficiency and effectiveness during detox. Copious studies indicate that whole foods (e.g., cruciferous vegetables, berries, garlic, etc.) and spices like turmeric can help your body detoxify through different pathways. Paired with protein and quality fat, these whole foods create an optimal food plan to support the detox process. Maintaining a varied and balanced diet can not only help to remove toxins from the body but can also provide the nutrients needed to remain healthy and enhance your overall wellbeing.
Re-Hydrate
It is important to remain properly hydrated. Water acts as a natural detoxing agent as it flushes out your system, bringing chemicals, toxins, fats, and other unwanted items with it as it leaves your body. On average, it is recommended to drink 64 oz of water, daily. When naturally detoxing it is advantageous to increase one’s daily intake to between 80 oz and 100 oz of water each day. The more water you drink, the more toxins you end up flushing out.
Work It Out
Manual therapies such as massage or dry brushing (a method of gently exfoliating your skin using a special firm-bristled brush) can help to eliminate toxins from your body by mobilizing the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is a network of tissues and organs that help rid the body of toxins, waste, and other unwanted materials by transporting lymph (a fluid that contains infection-fighting white blood cells) throughout the body. Exercising not only releases endorphins, but by accelerating your heart and causing your body to sweat, you are eliminating unhealthy toxins through your pores. Sauna therapy is also an effective way eliminate a heavy amount of sweat, which releases chemicals out of your body. Together with exercise and sauna therapy, massage can greatly enhance the ability of the lymphatic, cardiopulmonary, and hepatorenal circulatory systems to eliminate toxins.
