Drugs are defined as “a medicine or other substance which has a physiological effect when ingested or otherwise introduced into the body… drugs are chemicals that alter, block, or mimic chemical reactions in the brain.” Drugs are used for a myriad of purposes; they may be taken for medicinal purposes or as a recreational activity.

The use of drugs has not only become normalized and accepted in American culture but is also widely and overtly advertised on all platforms. In a society where drug use has become exceedingly normalized, it can be challenging to find ways to stay away from drugs. To help you steer clear of drugs consider the following suggestions:

  • Say no: Practice saying no to someone when they offer you a drink or drugs and avoid succumbing to peer pressure.
    • Prioritize eating right: Food is not only meant for sustenance. It is a fantastic way to energize yourself and nourish your body. Taking the time to eat healthy foods helps to fuel not only your body, but also your mind. Eat balanced and nutritious meals, stay properly hydrated, and try new foods.
    • Improve your sleep hygiene: Go to bed at a decent time to give your body and mind sufficient rest. Cultivating healthy sleep habits can help you stay mentally, physically, and emotionally fit.
    • Exercise: Integrating regular exercise into your daily or weekly routine can help you stay in shape, and release endorphins which help to reduce pain and increase pleasure, making you feel happier, and enhances your overall mood.
    • Explore relaxation methods: Test out as many different relaxation methods as you can to figure out what resonates with you best. Consider trying meditation, yoga, reading, listening to music, journaling, etc. to help quiet your mind. Research has found that meditation can help lower blood pressure, reduce feelings of anxiety and depression, improve insomnia, and more.
  • Keep busy: Fill up your time with activities that do not revolve around drugs and make time for recreational activities and hobbies. Getting creative, for example, can be an excellent emotional outlet, stress-reliever, and mood booster; consider painting, sculpting, ceramics, cooking, etc.
  • End toxic relationships: Let go of friends or family members who try to pressure you to use drugs.
